How does Diabetes affect the foot? Diabetes can affect small blood vessels throughout the body, causing decreased circulation in various body parts. In the foot , decreased circulation results in decreased ability to heal wounds and to resist infection . A small wound which does not heel can enlarge to become a very serious problem. Diabetics tend to form ulcers at areas of excessive pressure on the foot. Other problems include painful burning, numbness or tingling of the toes, and muscle weakness.
What can the podiatrist do to prevent foot problems in diabetics? Routinre regular care for ingrown toe nails, corns and callouses which can prevent more serious problems and complications surfacing and should be an important aspect of prevention.
Should vision be diminished in conjunction with poor co ordination together with poor circulation can be the cause of severe complications as the person can not see if something is wrong , combine this with loss of sensation and this could be the beginning of a serious problem developing. A sore that doesn’t heal easily should raise a suspicion that something is wrong. Burning and tingling could be a sign of circulation and nerve damage, often present in diabetics. Where pressure occurs many forms of cushioning the area can be introduced by the podiatrist to prevent infections and ulcers and other complications developing.
